Rain, wind, even sleet — it’s not the best weather to start a holiday weekend, but forecasters say it’s only temporary.

The National Weather Service said more than an inch of rain could fall on the Boston area Friday, starting midmorning and lasting into the night.

Temperatures were only expected to reach about 40 degrees, with 20mph winds. Gusts of 45mph or more were likely on the Cape and Islands.

“Higher terrain, particularly above 1,000 feet, may still see a mix of sleet and freezing rain with some light ice accumulations possible,” a forecast said.

A winter weather advisory was posted for central and western Massachusetts and most of New Hampshire, warning of slippery conditions and the possibility of snow.

Milder weather was expected to make a comeback by Saturday afternoon, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s through Marathon Monday.
