Arroyo, 33, of Jamaica Plain, declared his candidacy Tuesday morning at a downtown union hall where he previously worked as an organizer.

The two-term at-large city councilor lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife. He is also the son of former city councilor Felix D. Arroyo.

Before making his announcement, Arroyo sent an email and letter to supporters to explain that he was thinking about a run for mayor and wanted to see what the interest was like and whether he could raise enough money.

Less than two weeks ago, Menino announced that he will not seek a sixth term this fall.
