Mother Nature seems to have a grudge against New England.
Forecasters say another significant winter storm is moving into the Boston area, bringing heavy, wet snow and strong winds.
The National Weather Service has declared a winter storm watch from Wednesday night until Friday morning. The entire coastline of Massachusetts is under a coastal flood warning. Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut are under the same warnings.
“This will be a longe duration storm,” the NWS said Wednesday morning. “Snow will become heavy at times from early Thursday morning before slowly tapering off by Friday morning.”
In all, Greater Boston could see up to eight inches of snow, although rain is more likely. Up to ten inches of snow are forecast to the south and west. Two to four inches of snow are predicted for Cape Cod and the Islands.
Winds are expected to be 20-30 miles per hour, with gusts as strong as 50 miles per hour.
Coastal flooding and beach erosion are of particular concern. The NWS expects “moderate to major” flooding during Friday morning’s high tide.
“Some areas may be inundated with two to four feet of water during the Friday morning high tide, especially those locations vulnerable to wave overwash,” forecasters said. “Large waves may cause scattered damage to vulnerable structures, and some evacuations may become necessary.” Most in danger are areas already damaged in February’s blizzard.
The weekend forecast actually looks nice, with clear skies and highs in the mid-40s. But we’re not done yet – yet another storm could reach Boston early next week.
