A South Boston man will appear in court Monday after he allegedly stole a Boston police cruiser, ran over an officer and was shot at while fleeing from cops this weekend.

Wilfredo Rodriguez, 37, of South Boston, will appear in South Boston District Court to answer to charges including assault and battery on a police officer, larceny of a motor vehicle and breaking and entering a motor vehicle.

Police said officers were called to Baxter Street in South Boston at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of a car break-in. When officers arrived they found Rodriguez and chased him on foot.

During the chase, Rodriguez was able to take off in a police cruiser that was parked at the scene, police said.

As he fled, he allegedly hit one officer and attempted to hit others.

“Due to the imminent danger, at least one officer discharged multiple rounds from his service firearm,” Boston police said in a statement. The bullets missed Rodriguez.

After a car chase and another foot pursuit, officers were finally able to catch up to Rodriguez and arrest him.

Two officers were taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Rodriguez was not injured.
