The Boston area is hard at work preparing for heavy snow and icy conditions that are expected to continue through Friday morning.
The National Weather Service in Taunton issued a Winter Storm Warning through 7 p.m. Thursday, upgrading an earlier Winter Weather Advisory. It predicted about 6 inches of accumulation, with wind gusts of up to 45 mph throughout the day.
The snow is expected to change into heavy rain by midday and last throughout the afternoon, then transition again into ice by early evening. Later into the night, the ice will return to snow and taper off into snow showers through Friday morning.
Public Works teams began pretreating roads at 5 a.m., with more than 300 pieces of equipment active for the morning commute, according to the Mayor's Office. Travel is expected to be slow on pretreated surfaces, and highly difficult on untreated roads.
States up and down the East Coast were slammed with heavy snow, sleet and rain Wednesday. The weather was blamed for at least 13 deaths in the region, Reuters reports.
