Boston University student killed on Spring Break in Mexico

BU A Boston University student was killed last week during a robbery in his native country of Mexico.

Diego Fernandez Montes, a freshman at Boston University, was taking a taxi in his hometown of Mexico City on Thursday when the incident took place.

A prayer vigil that drew more than 50 students was held in Diego’s honor at Marsh Chapel over the weekend, while the school’s Catholic Center held a mass of remembrance.

BU Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore will announce plans for a future campus memorial for Fernandez later this week.

“In reality,” Diego’sfather told BU Today, “I’m very much at peace, because Diego was at peace. He was at peace with everyone. He didn’t have any qualms, any regrets. If you asked me if I knew anybody who was spiritually prepared to take off from this world, it was Diego.”

Friends of Montes told BU Today that he loved living in Boston and attending BU, where he recently developed an appreciation for photography.

Counseling is available for any Boston University students struggling with grief.
