A 4-year-old boy died while in the care of a babysitter in Midtown Wednesday, police said.
The 37-year-old babysitter called 911 at 10:50 a.m. saying the child was unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital, police said.
The boy, who was not immediately identified by police, was found with bruising and signs of trauma, but the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, police said. He also reportedly had burns, possibly from a lit cigarette, about his body.
In her statement to police, the babysitter said she seated the boy on a ledge near an empty bathtub before leaving the bathroom for a moment. She rushed back into the room after hearing something fall to the ground, police said.
The boy's father, recently arrested on an outstanding warrant in New Jersey, left his son in the woman's care last month, police said. The Administration of Child Services is investigating the death.
No criminal charges had been filed Thursday morning.
