A Brookline ban of disposable plastic shopping bags and styrofoam containers went into effect on Sunday but changes may be phased in gradually at retail stores and restaurants around town.
Brookline officials said they will allow retailers affected by the ban to use their current inventories before switching to alternative bags.
Brookline Town Meeting approved the bans in 2012 citing concerns that the products are not good for the environment.
About 70 businesses and 350 restaurants are expected to be affected by the ban.
