Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes established a panel to review the convictions of cases involving former NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella, who has come under suspicion recently after the exoneration of David Ranta, apparently wrongfully convicted of killing Rabbi Chaskell Werzberger.
Ranta spent more than two decades in prison. Scarcella has been accused of several alleged acts of misconduct, including allowing prisoners out of jail to smoke crack cocaine in exchange for testimony implicating Ranta for the murder.
The panel, comprised of several former top law enforcement officials and legal experts, will aid the Conviction Integrity Unit's investigation of 40 homicide convictions involving 50 defendants from the 1980s and 1990s.
