The New York City Medical Examiner has ruled the death of a Brooklyn toddler a homicide.

Jeida Torres, 3, was found bruised and unresponsive Saturday afternoon in the Bushwick apartment where she lived, which is a homeless shelter. Torres’ stepfather, Kelsey Shawn Smith, 20, was arrested Sunday on charges of felony assault and acting in a manner that was injurious to a child less than 17 years old.

An autopsy found blunt injuries to the head and torso killed the child.

Additional charges are expected to be filed.

Smith allegedly beat the child after she soiled herself. Torres’ brother was also treated for injuries at a local hospital.
