Cambridge police step up presence after robberies

Cambridge police are warning residents to be vigilant after six people were victims of armed robberies in a 28-hour period.

Police presence will be increased as a result of the robberies in the mid-Cambridge, Inman Square and East Cambridge areas, said spokesman Dan Riviello.

“They’ve been armed robberies, but no one has been injured and we want to keep it that way,”

The most recent robbery occurred Tuesday about 11:53 p.m. near Cardinal Medeiros Avenue and Marney Street when a man was approached by two men who stole his bag.

Four other similar incidents took place Monday evening and Tuesday.

It is believed at least four of the robberies are connected, but police are still investigating.

Police have warned residents to not resist if they are robbed, be aware of their surroundings when walking, don’t walk while wearing earphones and to always walk with a friend or in groups if possible.

Since yesterday, police have been sending alerts and safety measures about the robberies to residents who have signed up on the city’s alert network.

“It’s very important to get this information via cell phones or e-mails, because that’s how people communicate,” Riviello said.
