UPDATE: Police say that the 22-year-old man who fell four stories in the accident and suffered severe head injuries was pronounced dead at 5:43 a.m. this morning
Just after midnight on Saturday, a fire escape collapsed outside a Center City apartment, dropping three people 40 feet, leaving them critically injured, ABC reported.
The three victims were hospitalized after the collapse.
A man, 22, was brought to Hahnemann Hospital with a severe head injury. A woman, 26, was at Jefferson University Hospital where she was listed in stable condition. Another woman, 24, was brought to the University of Pennsylvania hospital.
The victims were reportedly trapped under the wreckage after the collapse occurred.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred at 229 S. 22nd St., in the Rittenhouse neighborhood.
The building is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as the John C Bell House, built in 1906 and converted into apartments in 1944.
