With the recent Chick-fil-A controversy in Boston, New Yorkers continued to add their names today to an old petition that aims at banning the fast food joint from NYU’s cafeteria.
Hillary Dworkoski, a bisexual student at NYU, started the petition in March because she said that supporting a company that funds anti-gay groups is inconsistent with the university’s values. In March, NYU officials said the chicken shop wasn’t going anywhere.
As Metro has reported, the fast-food chain has come under fire several times this year for its financial contributions to conservative groups like Focus On The Family, Exodus International and the Family Research Council, which critics say promote anti-gay agendas.
Boston’s mayor Thomas Menino said last week that Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston and will have to fight city hall to bring the franchise to Boston.
“Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston,” he said. “You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against the population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.”
The Chik-fil-A NYU is the only one in the city.
