It’s often said that Boston is a city of neighborhoods. Every few weeks, Metro will toss a dart at a map of the Hub, then provide you a snapshot of what we’ve found.
Tom Joyce already had his hands full mixing cement in front of his Dexter Street home on a recent afternoon. But that didn’t stop the lifelong neighborhood resident from asking a neighbor if she needed help carrying items out of her own house yesterday.
“Thanks anyway,” she yelled back.
Joyce and other longtime residents of this area said it’s that kind of interaction that has kept them living in the neighborhood for decades.
“It’s always been a tight-knit neighborhood,” said Joyce, who has lived in the neighborhood more than 40 years. “There’s not really a whole lot of homes here. … If somebody moves in, you get to know them.”
But in recent years the area’s “condo explosion” has brought in many new faces and personalities.
“Then there are the people who keep to themselves,” Joyce said.
Billy Tredisone, a lifelong resident and roofer, agreed that the people is what has kept him in the neighborhood and added that the proximity to various bars, the South Bay Shopping Center, highway and the T makes the area attractive.
However all that business has its downfall: “The parking sucks,” Tredisone said.
