City oversight lags as construction accidents climb

A Daily News investigation uncovered a rise in construction site injuries, and a decline in worksite inspections.

In the city alone, there was a 31 percent increase in site accidents from 2011 to 2012, up to 157 from 119, and a 46 percent increase in injuries, from to 187 from 128.

According to the News, records show the buildings department cut the the number of inspections by 40 percent. In 2009, there were 244,000, but only 141,000 in 2012.

Last week, a 380-foot crane collapsed, injuring seven workers in Queens.
