Three of the city’s zoos have welcomed five new California sea lions: four rescued from the wild and a fifth born at the Bronx Zoo, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
“We are happy to provide a home for these rescued animals and to add genetic diversity to our sea lion propagation program,” said Jim Breheny, WCS executive vice president and Bronx Zoo director.
Two adult male sea lions rescued in Oregon can now be seen at the Queens Zoo, and two female sea lions rescued off the coast of Point Hueneme in California have joined the Prospect Park Zoo family in Brooklyn.
All of the rescued animals are doing well, officials said.
In the Bronx, a sea lion pup was born to mother Indy and father Kiani on June 28. She is female and still unnamed, according to the WCS. She joins Halftime, Margaretta, McCabe, Nav and Indy in the pool on the Bronx Zoo’s Astor Court.
