Commuters’ wallets get double hit

City commuters will take another hit to their wallets on Jan. 1, 2011. Starting next year, those who take advantage of pre-tax commuter benefits will only be able to take out $120 in pre-tax dollars each month. Currently, they can take out $230 each month in pre-tax money.

The $230 cap’s expiration comes when LIRR and MTA commuters will be hit with a fare hike that will raise monthly MetroCards to $104. Regular LIRR riders will be hit especially hard, as monthly passes already cost well over $120.

“Commuters are essentially hit with another fare increase to the cost of their commute,” said Dan Neuburger, CEO of TransitCenter, a New York company that provides the pre-tax commuter benefit service.
