A construction worker on the job Monday in East Boston was killed by a 12,000-pound steel beam.
The victim was identified as Marco Antonio Huezo Mancea, 46, who works for Boston Bridge & Steel Inc. Mancea was declared dead on the scene.
“A large piece in an arch shape shifted on the worker, trapping him underneath,” Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department, told the Boston Globe.
On Monday night, the fire department was still working to recover Mancea's body from the scene.
“It’s very time-consuming to safely move [the steel] with as much dignity as we can for the victim,” MacDonald told the Globe.
Because the company is on Massport property, the accident is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police.
Just last week, another construction worker was killed while on the job in Boston. The victim was fatally injured by a scissor lift at a site in Downtown Crossing, and was later brought to Tufts New England Medical Center, the Globe reported.
