A state police trooper who was recently convicted in federal court of extortion for threatening a gambler was fired Wednesday.

John Analetto was given a dishonorable discharge effective at the close of business Wednesday, according to state police.

State police Colonel Timothy Alben said Analetto’s actions “are diametrically opposed to the core values, standards, and character of Massachusetts state troopers.”

Analetto was found guilty last month for threatening a gambler who owed money to a bookie.
