A Salem man who allegedly fled the scene of a car crash early Monday was arrested after he attempted to get back his dog that he left behind at the crash site.

Ericson Ismael Almonte, 21, was arrested on charges including driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of property damage and outstanding warrants, according to The Salem News.

Police responded to a car crash just after 1 a.m. Monday. Two cars had to be towed away and one of them had a dog in it. Officers took charge of the dog since the owner, who police said was Almonte, fled the scene.

Hours later, a man showed up at the Salem Police station trying to claim the dog. The officer noticed a taxi in the parking lot and when he approached it saw that Almonte was sitting in the backseat, according to The Salem News.

That’s when police arrested Almonte.
