An 18-year-old from Osterville was apparently drag racing another car before he lost control and crashed early Sunday morning, police said.

The teen was killed when his car rolled over and struck a tree along Route 6 in Harwich just before 1 a.m., according to state police.

The crash occurred on Route 6 eastbound between exits 9 and 10. When state police troopers arrived, they found a black BMW X5 sport utility vehicle on the right side of the roadway. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that this vehicle and a second vehicle were racing prior to the crash,” state police said.

An 18-year-old from Hyannis, the driver of the other car, was charged with reckless driving, speeding and racing a motor vehicle.

Police are looking for witnesses who were driving in the area at the time of the crash.
