Gov. Tom Corbett signed the transportation funding bill Monday that will raise billions to help remedy lingering issues with the state's infrastructure.
The bill, which will fund repairs to Pennsylvania's highways, bridges and mass-transit systems, will be paid for by tax increases to motorists.
The transportation package invests about $2.3 billion into the state’s roads and bridges by the fifth year of the plan.
The raise in gas taxes and driver fees will be phased in over the next five years. The first fuel increase, which will be levied against gas station owners, will take effect on Jan. 1. It's not yet known how much of the increase will be passed onto motorists.
Changes in vehicle and drivers’ license fees will also help to fund the plan, but will not take effect until 2015.
Many road and bridge projects are slated to start next spring.
“This is an investment in the safety of our citizens and the progress of our economy," Corbett said in a news release.
By the numbers
By the fifth year of the plan, this legislation invests an additional:
$1.3 billion annually for state roads and bridges
$480 million to $495 million annually for public transportation
$237 million annually for local roads and bridges
$144 million annually in a multi-modal fund
$30 million annually for dirt, gravel and low-volume roadways
$86 million annually for Pennsylvania Turnpike expansion projects
Projects that will be completed as a result of the bill includes:
- $80 million: Rehabilitation of the Chestnut Street Bridge at 30th Street.
- $110 million: Replacement of Vine Street Expressway Bridges.
- $216 million: Rehabilitation of nearly three miles of roadway as well as 11 bridges and four retaining walls along Route 1 in Bucks County.
- $216 million: Two new lanes along an eight mile stretch of Route 322 in Delaware County.
