City Councilor John Connolly didn’t waste any time getting into the race for mayor this year.

And Connolly didn’t waste any time Wednesday night when he issued a statement praising Mayor Thomas Menino just hours after reports were being made that the 70-year-old mayor decided against running for re-election.

Connolly issued the statement even though Menino’s office hadn’t officially confirmed his decision.

The full text of Connolly’s statement can be read below:

“Today we celebrate and thank Mayor Tom Menino for his service and unquestionable love for our city. He has personally touched the lives of tens of thousands of Bostonians, and he ensured a higher quality of life across Boston’s neighborhoods. I am thankful to have worked with him, and to have learned from him.”

Connolly announced his candidacy for mayor earlier this year before it was clear if Menino was going to run again. That move, now that Menino has opted out of running again, puts Connolly at an advantage. However, Menino’s stepping aside opens the flood gates of potential candidates.
