A car crash late Monday in Saugus ended with the death of a toddler and the arrest of a man who was allegedly driving without a license.

Police said officers were called to the scene of the two-car crash on Walnut Street just after 10:30 p.m.

When officers arrived they found two badly damaged cars, police said.

Inside the first car, a 2005 Volvo, police found a 43-year-old Lynn man with injuries. He refused treatment at the scene. Also in that car was a 3-year-old boy who sustained serious injuries. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the second car, a 1998 Ford Explorer, was driven by Daniel Ortega, 40, of Lynn. After being treated at a Boston hospital, police arrested Ortega after discovering he allegedly had a 2005 warrant for driving without a license.

Saugus police charged him with driving without a license in Monday night’s crash.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
