The comment made by Gov. Andrew Cuomo about Anthony Weiner’s mayoral run that swarmed news reports on Thursday was just a joke, a Cuomo administration official said.

“The remark was made in jest. As the governor has said many times, he has no plan to endorse in this year’s mayoral primary,” said the official, who declined to be identified, according to The New York Times.

The response came after The Syracuse Post-Standard published on Wednesday a transcript of an interview between the governor and Syracuse Media Group Chairman Stephen Rogers:

“So if Anthony Weiner wants to run for mayor, he can run for mayor?” Cuomo was asked.

“He runs? He runs.”

“And if we elect him?”

“Shame on us,” Cuomo said.

When asked again about Weiner at an appearance on Thursday, Cuomo replied, “I don’t have an official position on the mayor’s race, and I’m going to leave it at that.”
