Cuomo to deliver ‘State of the State’

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s first State of the State address is today, and he’s expected to deliver some tough budget-slashing talk with an upbeat tone. We asked New Yorkers what they want to hear.

Watch Cuomo’s address live from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at http://governor.ny.gov.

“I’m hoping to hear something in his speech about the growing income disparity in the city and the state. … It has a major effect on school and teachers. We need a strong working and middle class in order to have good schools.” –Michael Mulgrew, United Federation of Teachers president

“This is really a time for setting some markers and announcing some specific projects and goals. … I hope to see Governor Cuomo building for the future, not just essentially treading water.” –John Kaehny, executive director of Reinvent Albany

“This can’t be a speech that’s completely about what we’re going to cut. There also has to be a positive narrative about how making these sacrifices will bring us to a better place.” –David Birdsell, Baruch College dean
