A Fox Chase playground baseball field will be renamed Sunday in honor of departed fire fighter Dan Sweeney.
At 11 a.m., Field 1, the largest of the four diamond at the upper fields of Fox Chase Playground in the Northeast Philly neighborhood, will be renamed FF Daniel Sweeney Field. A sign will be placed behind the backstop, where he played catcher for his Fox Rok baseball teams.
Sweeney and Lt. Robert Neary were killed on April 9, 2012 after a wall collapsed at a Kensington fire.
Following the dedication ceremony the second annual softball tournament, which raises money for a scholarship in Sweeney’s name, will commence. His brethren of the Engine 7/Ladder 10 will be the first to play on the field after it’s dedicated.
All proceeds will go to the Daniel Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The honor is the culmination of a year-long neighborhood lobby.
