Decomposed body found on Gilgo Beach

Suffolk County police again combed Gilgo Beach yesterday afternoon after cadaver-sniffing dogs found skeletal human remains Tuesday night a mile from where four bodies were found in December.

The grim discovery of badly decomposed remains was made at 6:53 p.m. Tuesday.

Yesterday, police called the family of Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute who went missing in the area in May of last year, and said it will take two weeks or longer to identify the remains.

Gilbert was last seen after visiting a client she met on Craigslist, according to police.

Meanwhile, Gilbert’s family can only pray she is still alive.

“We are keeping hope alive, but it’s hard to separate your gut feelings from your heart,” said an out-of-state family member who preferred not to be identified.

“It’s tough on all of us,” she said, referring to herself and Gilbert’s three sisters and mother.

“But the hardest part of all is to think of the fear she must have felt and the fact that she must have cried out for help and no one was there to help her,” she said.

The remains were taken to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner in Hauppauge, where an investigation will be conducted to evaluate and identify them.

“This has all the marks of a serial killer,” Suffolk Commissioner Richard Dormer told Metro in January.

“Four bodies of women all engaged in the same occupation, the bodies dumped in the same area, the same age range and all missing women.”
