Delaware college graduate student charged with rape of undergrad

A 23-year-old graduate student at a Delaware college was arrested and charged with the rape of an 18-year-old undergraduate, state police said.

Carlos E. Bastardo, of Wilmington, Del., allegedly met the girl in his apartment about 3 a.m. Sunday on the campus of Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington. The girl is an acquaintance, Delaware State Police said.

Once inside, Bastardo began to make sexual advances toward the girl, which were not accepted, police said.

Police said the man then forcibly sexually assaulted the girl.

After the encounter, the girl was able to free herself and fled the apartment, police said.

The woman visited a local hospital for treatment, and then contacted local authorities.

Bastardo was charged with second-degree rape. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of a $120,000 bond.
