Fifteen new universities from across the world, including two located here in Boston, have joined the nonprofit partnership that offers free online courses from some of the most respected institutes of higher learning.

EdX announced Tuesday that it has added 15 new schools to its consortium members, including Boston University and Berklee College of Music.

EdX was launched last year by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is focused on “transforming online and on-campus learning.”

“As we continue to grow the xConsortium and offer courses from institutions as diverse as our global community of students, we are moving forward with our mission to reimagine education,” said Anant Agarwal, president of the Cambridge-based program.”These schools, with their unique faculties and student bodies, will help us conduct collaborative research on best practices, which improve education online and on campus.”

EdX said that, to date, it has had more than 900,000 participants.
