An elderly woman died of severe injuries after she was struck by a car in a hit-and-run collision only blocks away from her Queens home.
Police said Kaneez Hussein, 73, fell as she crossed the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and 131st Street when an eastbound grey Nissan hit her at around 6:32 a.m.
Emergency workers took Hussein to Jamiaca Hospital in critical condition, with injuries to her head and leg. She was pronounced dead once at the hospital.
Witnesses at the scene pointed officers in the direction of the driver, identified as Bladimer Alvarez Sorto, 27.
Alvarez Sorto reportedly fled the scene — an act typically charged as a felony — but was caught by officers soon after the collision.
Police said on Thursday afternoon that there were questions about the validity of the the driver's license.
In January, the Daily News reported that Queens was the deadliest borough for pedestrians, with 46 of the city's 173 pedestrians deaths in 2013.
On Tuesday, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said that the Police Department would bring considerable focus on both speeding and drivers' failure to yield to pedestrians.
