A 8-year-old boy made a heroic save early Thursday morning when a car accident sent his father's vehicle into a Fitchburg river.
WBZ reports the father and son were driving on Oak Hill Road when they crashed into a guard rail and landed upside down in the Nashua River below.
Police told WBZ the boy managed to extract himself from the car and swim across the river through the heavy current to shore. Once on solid ground, the boy walked over a mile to his home to wake up his mother and call for help to retrieve the father, who was still trapped in the vehicle.
The father and son were taken to Leominster Hospital for full evaluations.
Thus far there is no word on the cause of the accident.
