The absence of the Flyers' trademark Ice Girls ice-cleaning team was noted by angry Flyers fans at Sept. 22, who booed throughout the ice cleaning by a new, all-male team.
So, at last night's pre-season game against the rangers, which the Flyers took 4-2, an epic video was played on the giant screen announcing that the Ice Girls will return.
"You spoke. We listened. The Ice Team returns. Opening night," the video states as it plays the famous score from Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," (composed by Richard Strauss as "Also sprach Zarathustra," a tone poem inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's famous book).
Auditions for the new Ice Girls team will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5 at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey. For more information visit philadelphiaflyers.com/iceteam.
The girls will lace up their skates for the Flyers' home opener on Thursday, Oct. 9 against the New Jersey Devils.
The Flyers never officially stated why the Ice Girls were canned, but it is rumored that an article in Mothers Jones magazine claiming the working conditions were poor may have led to the decision.
