The former head of the Boston office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was charged with a federal crime for allegedly having professional contact with the FBI once he retired and went to work for a private investigative technology company.
Kenneth Kaiser, 57, of Hopkinton, is charged with making prohibited post-employment contacts, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced Thursday. He could face up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
Kaiser worked as head of the Boston FBI between 2003 and 2006. He then went to work as an assistant director for the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 2009.
Upon his retirement he went to work for LocatePlus, a Boston-based investigative technology and database company. He was hired to conduct an internal investigation into wrongdoings by the company’s chief executives and to generate government sales for the company as Director of Government Sales.
It was in those capacities that Kaiser allegedly had “numerous prohibited electronic, telephonic and in-person contacts” with FBI employees regarding the investigation into LocatePlus, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
He also allegedly contacted FBI employees in an effort to sell LocatePlus’ products.
A federal ethics law prohibits senior personnel from making professional contacts with the agency in which they were employed for one year after their end of government service.
