A seven-year-old girl who was severely injured and whose brother was killed in the Boston Marathon bombing has been moved to a rehabilitation hospital.
Jane Richard lost her left leg below the knee in the April 15 explosions near the marathon finish line. Her eight-year-old brother, Martin, was one of the three people killed.
In a blog post, the Richard family announced that Jane was released from Boston Children’s Hospital on Thursday, after 39 days in the hospital’s intensive care unit and 12 surgeries.
“Jane was transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital where she will undergo rehab to regain her strength, balance and stamina,” the statement read. “Jane and her body will ultimately dictate the timeline for her stay at Spaulding. Jane’s stay will serve as a bridge to what will be the ‘new normal’ for Jane and our family going forward.”
The family described the girl as being in “good spirits and looking forward to beginning the next phase of her recovery”
“While we remain devastated over Martin’s death and all that has happened to us, Jane’s determination for getting better is an inspiring source of strength for the entire family,” the family said.
Denise Richard, the children’s mother, suffered a shrapnel wound to one eye. Her husband, Bill, is recovering from leg injuries and hearing loss. Martin and Jane’s brother, Henry, was not hurt.
The family plans to hold a memorial Mass on June 9, which would have been Martin’s ninth birthday, at St. Ann Church in Dorchester.
