MBTA Transit Police are lauding a group of good Samaritans who this week tackled an alleged purse snatcher at the Downtown Crossing station.

Transit Police charged Cesar Gonzalez, 26, of Boston, with attempted unarmed robbery and drug possession.

Gonzalez was traveling on a Red Line train with the victim when it pulled into Downtown Crossing at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. When the woman got off the train and began walking along the platform, Gonzlaez allegedly came up from behind her and tried to take her purse, police said.

The woman held on tightly to her purse and yelled for help. That’s when a group of commuters came to help and held Gonzalez on the floor until police arrived.

When officers later searched Gonzalez, they allegedly found a substance believed to be heroin, police said.
