Gov. Deval Patrick is escaping the return of bitter cold temperatures in Boston and heading for sunshine and warmth in Costa Rica.

Patrick leaves for the Central American country on Tuesday, according to his public schedule. He is scheduled to return Sunday.

With Patrick out of Massachusetts, and former Lt. Gov. Tim Murray having resigned last year, Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin is acting governor, according to the line of succession.

Patrick, whose second and final term comes to an end in January, in a recent interview said he “maybe” could see himself as a national candidate for president in the future.
