An overnight water main break in Greenwich Village has caused a mess of a morning commute, with street closures and several subway disruptions.
The break occurred shortly after midnight at East 13th Street and Fifth Avenue, flooding the area and forcing the city to close Fifth Avenue between 12th and 14th streets.
The MTA announced several service changes affecting the B, C, D, F, M and Q lines.
From the MTA’s website:
- Southbound B service suspended from Bedford Park
- Northbound B trains operating between Brighton Beach and Ditmars Boulevard routed via the local in Brooklyn then via Q from DeKalb Avenue to Ditmars
- Northbound M trains terminate at Essex Street and Chambers Street
- Southbound M trains rerouted via the F from 36 Street/Queens to 34 Street-Sixth Avenue
- Southbound D trains routed via the local track in the Bronx and terminate at 34 Street-Sixth Avenue
- Northbound D trains rerouted via the Q from Pacific St to 57 Street-Seventh Avenue
- Southbound and northbound C trains rerouted via the express from 59 Street to Canal Street
- Northbound and southbound F rerouted via the E from West Fourth Street to Roosevelt Avenue
Commuters on these lines should anticipate major delays, the MTA announced. Crews are working to clear water from the tracks.
Buses that travel through the affected area are being detoured due to the street closures.
The water main break was under control by about 5:30 a.m., according to the fire department.
