Guggenheim takes on YouTube

NEW YORK. Cats playing piano, skateboarding tricks, people imitating Lady Gaga proliferate on YouTube. Is it any of it art?

The Guggenheim museum wants to find out. It’s elevating YouTube videos to high culture status through a competition it launched with the popular website yesterday, seeking the world’s most creative online video.

“We’re not looking for what’s ‘now’,” said Nancy Spector, deputy director of the Guggenheim Foundation, “we’re looking for what’s next.”

A jury of art, design, film and entertainment experts will select up to 20 videos for “YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video,” which will be presented at the New York museum on Oct. 21 and projected simultaneously at Guggenheim outposts in Berlin, Bilbao and Venice. Submissions are due July 31.
