A bishop from the Diocese of Harrisburg died unexpectedly today in Philadelphia, officials said.
Bishop Joseph P. McFadden, 65, fell ill while visiting the city and died shortly after visiting a local hospital, according to a news release. He was here attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania.
McFadden, a Philadelphia native, worked in the city as a priest and auxiliary bishop before being appointed the tenth bishop of Harrisburg in June 2010.
"I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Bishop Joseph McFadden of the Diocese of Harrisburg," said Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput in a statement. "I am grateful that I had the opportunity to be with him over the last few days at the Annual Spring Meeting of the Pennsylvania Bishops and spend time in conversation with him."
