Public Advocate Bill de Blasio won the support of entertainment icon and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte in the race for mayor Tuesday.
The humanitarian praised de Blasio's stance on education, healthcare and efforts to end current stop-and-frisk tactics of the NYPD.
"We're in a time when we are desperately in need of a man who has a great vision, a great sense of the needs of the community, and a man who is committed to the working people of this city," Belafonte said in a statement.
"The one who stands valiantly in the vanguard, and is going to change an important paradigm, is Bill de Blasio," he said.
Belafonte was joined by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, who also formally announced her endorsement for de Blasio.
