How Brooklyn saved Walter

A badly abused puppy has attracted an outpouring of sympathy and fundraising in Brooklyn.

Walter, a pit bull, was dumped out of a car at Third Ave. and 15th Street in Park Slope and found Easter Sunday by nearby resident Alex Darsey, 38. Despite care, Walter soon got worse and was near death when Darsey and others from Southpaw — the Park Slope club that’s adopted him — brought him into the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group in Cobble Hill.

“He was malnourished,” said Dr. Brett Levitzke. “He has horrible demodectic mange. He doesn’t have any fur at this point.”

After 10 days of round the clock care, his prognosis for a full recovery is strong.

“As soon as he had enough strength to lift his head, he was wagging his tail and giving kisses,” Levitske said. “He’s a fantastic dog.”

Levitzke, Dr. Kelly Gavin and others donated services. A Facebook page and blog helped raise funds. The Gate, a local bar, is putting proceeds from today toward his cause. Extra funds will help abused animals, Darsey said. “To watch a whole community rally behind him is inspirational,” he added.
