A Hyde Park man lost both his hands Friday after he allegedly tampered with explosive materials in his basement apartment.

Investigators said the man, who was not identified, caused an explosion around 9:30 a.m. at a Riley Roadapartment complex that blew off both his hands, injured six other people, including firefighters who suffered chemical inhalation, and started a fire. The man may have been trying to create fireworks, according to The Herald.

No charges had been announced as of Sunday morning.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis told The Herald that police have ruled out drugs and terrorism as connected to the blast, but said they were checking their databases to determine who the man was and what he may have been doing in the apartment.

“We’ll be going through everything, not just the chemicals in the room, but all of the evidence as we execute a search warrant,” Davis said.
