An investigation is continuing Monday to determine what led up to Boston Police officers fatally shooting a man in Dorchester early Sunday.

“The community can count on a full and impartial investigation by our office,” said Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, whose office is investigating the shooting. “We recognize the importance of transparency in a case like this.”

Authorities said police were called to the area of 76 Willowwood St. about 1:50 a.m. for a report of shots fired. Police said they were called there about 30 minutes earlier for the same report.

When officers arrived witnesses at a party told them that a man was in a car firing a gun.

Police said the officers approached the man in the car and he shot at them. Officers then returned fire and shot the man.

The 37-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he died.

Besides the Suffolk district attorney’s office, the police department’s Internal Affairs Unit is also investigating.
