A 57-year-old Avon man who allegedly pinned the blame on his estranged brother after drunkenly crashing his car in a bus-only Silver Line tunnel has been arrested, exactly two weeks after the alleged incident.

Transit Police said last month they had secured an arrest warrant for James Tilton, who on Oct. 25 allegedly drove into a barrier within the bus-only MBTA tunnel.

Police said Tilton’s brother, William, was charged after he gave officers personal identifiers that included a Social Security number, date of birth and address belonging to William Tilton.

“Upon discovery of this informationthe Transit Police Department took immediate actionand secured an arrest warrant for the rightful subject, James Tilton,” Transit Police said in a statement posted Tuesday, hours after his arrest.

Tilton faces charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and giving a false name, according to Transit Police.

Editor’s note: Police originally reported that Tilton was from Wilmington, however on Tuesday they said he is an Avon resident.
