U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan, former offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles and current South Jersey resident, surprisingly announced today he will not seek re-election when his term expires next year.
Runyan, a moderate Republican who has served two terms for New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, said in a statement, "Politics shouldn't be a career and I never intended to make it one."
While Runyan, 39, of Mount Laurel, NJ, said it was an honor to serve the 28 municipalities in Burlington County and 23 in Ocean County, "At this stage in my life, and more importantly, the lives of my three children, spending time with them is my top priority," he said.
Runyan's retirement could cause disruption in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives with Democrats eyeing the mostly Republican-held seat.
