Julian Edelman in court for personal foul

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman must stay away from a Copley Square nightclub as well as a man and woman after he allegedly grabbed the woman’s genitalia while at a club for Halloween.

Edelman, 25, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday on a charge of indecent assault and battery. Prosecutors did not seek to hold Edelman on bail and he was released on his own recognizance.

The third-year Patriot was at Storyville about 1:30 a.m. yesterday when a woman there told police that he “reached under her costume and grabbed her vagina,” according to a police report.

A witness told police that he saw Edelman bump into the woman and her face “change into an expression of shock.” The witness then threatened to “beat up” Edelman, the club’s manager told police, and the witness and woman were bounced from the club.

Edelman was arrested shortly after police arrived.

A person who answered the phone at Storyville said the manger was not there and hung up on a reporter.

Edelman and his lawyer, Amy McNamee, said nothing to reporters at the courthouse yesterday.

Edelman did, however, stop on his way to a black SUV and sign a football helmet for a man waiting outside the courthouse.

In a statement, Edelman’s agent Don Yee said the charges “will be fought vigorously” within the courts, “instead of a rush to judgment elsewhere.”

Coach Bill Belichick said he didn’t have a comment during a regular conference call yesterday.

“I think just what the statement says. I don’t think we have enough information to comment on that right now,” Belichick said.
