Leukemia-stricken NJ teen asks Taylor Swift to prom

Victoria McGuire, a recent Rowan University graduate and teacher at KinderCare in Cherry Hill, wanted to do something for her 18-year-old brother, Kevin, when he was diagnosed with leukemia – for the second time.

So she created a Facebook page petitioning his teen idol, country star Taylor Swift, to accompany him to prom at South Jersey’s Sterling High School Tuesday night. The page has since grown into a phenomenon, attracting over 36,000 supporters and creating a trending Twitter hashtag, #TeamKevin.

“When I started this page I had no idea it would spread like this! … This is not an invitation to the Sterling Prom, rather a support in numbers! Clicking join increases our numbers, and increases our chances of Taylor seeing out page and agreeing to go to the prom with my brother!!” the page information reads.

McGuire was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 13 and “fought the battle of his life,” receiving a clean bill of health in April 2010, according to the page. “All through out Kevin’s treatment he kept his character in tact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman. Kevin is known through out the community as the High school’s ‘real life SUPER MAN!'” it reads.

He is now fighting cancer for the second time, and he hopes Swift will fulfill his one wish, according to his sister.

The Jun. 1 prom happens to fall on McGuire’s birthday.
