A 71-year-old man was killed in a dispute at a nursing home in the Rockaways late Tuesday night, police said.
Police arrived at Beacon Nursing Home about 1:23 a.m. on Wednesday to find the man beaten, unconscious and unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel took him to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said. He had suffered a fractured skull.
A 67-year-old man was taken in custody by police at the scene. Police said he had been the victim's roommate since July, and the two men had been fighting lately about privacy and the curtain that separates their beds.
Police said a nursing home employee reported checking on the men and finding the suspect standing over the victim with the leg rest of a wheelchair raised over his head.
The nursing home employee reportedly asked what he was doing, and police said the suspect responded, "I just killed him." The suspect reportedly put the leg rest in a hamper then waited for police to arrive.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
