A Strawberry Mansion man died after he reportedly drove his car into the Schuylkill River near Kelly Drive on Tuesday evening.
The quick thinking of a crew coach who was leading her team in practice likely helped prevent a second death in the incident, 6ABC Action News reports. The Penn Charter coach was able to break the car's rear window with a fire extinguisher and pull a passenger from the sinking vehicle.
It took Philadelphia police divers nearly an hour to pull the body of a 31-year-old Strawberry Mansion man from the Schuylkill. He was later pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital, where the passenger was last listed in stable condition.
It is believed the driver accidentally put the car into drive instead of reverse as he attempted to pull out of a lot along the river.
